MMM11 - 04 Espalda cubierta - Not so revealing back

Español
English

So this is a pathetic Photoshop attempt, I hate that program with a passion!

Despite being a potato sack weird shape, I’ve worn this dress, Burda 01-2011-128, many times this winter, specially on those days of the month. It’s also perfect to disguise a big meal. If anything, the styling is kind of limited, it doesn’t work with belts, cardis o blazers, so the variation is minimal.

I’m ready for the weekend, are you?

MMM11-03 Terapia de color - Color theraphy

Español
English

The sky is still dreary grey, it’s cold outside and I don’t want to get out of bed. Nothing like a bit of red to cheer up an otherwise plain office wear (and my mood). Plus, a polka dot scarf!

The skirt was a super quick project, I hardly spent an afternoon sewing it.

MMM11-02 Vacaciones en Roma - Roman Holiday

Español
English

I´m neither in Rome nor on holidays!

My mum has given me this skirt, origin unknown, but modified several times in length and waist. I´m guessing I´m the third or fourth owner. I had an inspiration moment, it´d be perfect with my white Burda 04/2010/102 blouse! Another almost-UFO, because of my sewing machine refusing to do buttonholes (or I´m just being clumsy at easy techniques, one more time).

The inspiration is obviously this lovely one:

MMM11-01 – Oldie but goldie

Español
English

Today´s the first day of Me-Made March 2011 (MMM11 from now on)!

I´m starting with one of my favorite dresses, V1150, a Cynthia Steffer design. It´s not the prettiest or the best sewn, but it´s a garment that brings fond memories. It was my first time sewing a Vogue designer pattern and also the first time with a knit. I started it with a bang, bumped into difficulties that at the time seemed the end of the world, let it rest for a while and finished it 2 months later (this behavior pattern sounds familiar, right?). Even with this difficult start I loved it once finished and I´ve worn it many times last summer. Once spring finally comes to stay, I´ll wear it more often. Or maybe redo it, this time properly?

Today I´m wearing it with a Zara cardigan, similar grey color and similar wonky pockets – made for each other!

Demasiadas opciones - Stop giving me choices!

Español
English

So, this is the state of the unión of things around here:

- The order I placed with Ray Stitch 2 weeks ago finally arrived yesterday (!!). It must have gone around the world and back, I don’t know. However, no complaints here because finally I got what my little heart desired: Colette’s Macaron – OH YEAH! I’ve been daydreaming about this darling pattern for a while, especially after I saw this version of Sew Happy Clothes.

- Talking about SHC, I love, love this version of V1162 made in a knit, and I have already pattern and fabric. I’ve read that it takes long (those flowers!) so it’ll have to wait till April.

- The bodice of the vintage dress is once again on Patty. She’s staring at me with accusingly eyes for a week already. So, yes, I *have* to finish this one, because I’m stubborn, proud and my sewing self steem depends on this (ok, not really, but it’d be great). And most important: my serger is still threaded in a dark color and this is the last Project before I move on to a spring palette.

- Yesterday I had a mini anxiety crisis, just thinking of all the cool things I want to sew and the lack of time – brrr. After going through my pattern collection one more time (now, that’s a hobby!) I reached some conclusions: 90% of my patterns are dresses, specifically short sleeved dresses. I’m not going to fight it, just buy a few cardis in spring colors and start sewing like a mad woman. And some skirts, for the instant satisfaction factor.

- Also, I’m tired of the blog jinx so no more talking about future projects till they’re ready. MMM11 is around the corner and I can’t afford any UFOs right now. All I can say s that there are some Vogues in the pipeline.

Today is the last chance to enter the giveaway, have you entered yet? Good luck!

I can’t stop humming this song, for obvious reasons:

Falda con Canesú 01-2011-112 No yoking!

Español
English

¡Otra falda terminada!

¿Qué te gusta/no te gusta específicamente?

¿Qué tela has usado?

¿Has cambiado algo del patrón?

Brr, vuelta a empezar.

Y ahora, unos pantalones …

Another one bites the dust! Finally this almost UFO is finished - MMM11, I'm ready!

More photos here.

Pattern Description:

Lined pencil skirt with front and back V-shaped yoke, side zipper and center back slit.

Pattern Sizing:

34-44, I sewed 36, my usual size in Burda.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Yes, mostly. See modifications below.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Yes, it's the pattern course with illustrations, so no complaints this time.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

The pattern as per Burda standards is quite well constructed and most mistakes were me-inflicted. But! the pattern is very long. I had read the reviews of model #113, the long version (72cm), so I went directly for #112 (same skirt, 67cm). It was still waaay too long, midcalf instead of under the knee. I ended up cutting about 20 cms and now it’s just above the knee. I should have traced #111 (miniskirt, 40cm) and add a few centimeters, it’d been easier and I’d saved myself some fabric. So, don’t be like me and measure the length before cutting!

Fabric Used:

The fabric is a navy blue remnant from my stash. Not sure of the content, but my bet would be a mixed wool/pol of sorts. Also, good quality lining for a change.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

- Not on purpose, but the V shape is now a soft curve. Sometimes you can’t fight it, just accept it already.

- I added 1 cm at the waist, thinking it’d be too tight. Afterwards this wasn’t really necessary, although I can sit now without bursting the seams. If the fabric had had any stretch I’d not bothered at all. Lesson learned, never distrust Burda sizing, it’s German precision.

- The length, obviously. And with the cut, out went the godet, too. I’m also wondering, if I’d made #113 version, would have reached my ankles?

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

I'm not going near a v-shape yoke any time soon! But yes, I'd recommend it, specially if you can handle triangles in sewing.

Conclusion:

Good pattern if you dare the V shaped yoke. It makes you feel pretty and put together, and the length can be adjusted to make it retro, work appropriate or youthful, so an all-round winner. The godet would’ve been a nice detail, maybe next time.

I feel more ready to tackle the MMM11 challenge. This is the second skirt in a week, using some fabric from the stash, too! I feel this streak of productivity is going to end about now. Now, about those pants …
