¡Dos años! ¡Dos años enteros sin escribir una palabra en el blog! ¿Hay alguien ahí que diga ay?

No os voy a aburrir con la historia de mi vida, o contaros que ese trabajo que empecé hace dos años me ha amargado la existencia bastante, ¡al menos tengo trabajo! Lloro (y mucho) pero con un ojo.

Así que retomo el blog por donde lo dejé, y empiezo con la reseña de un abrigo de los míos, de los que hacen historia. Se trata del Vogue V1332 de Pamella Roland. También conocido en mi casa como el abrigo tortuga, escarabajo, no saldrás a la calle con eso puesto, no, en serio, diosmíoquevergüenza. A lo que yo respondo #LOL! y #porsupuestísimo, así con hashtag y todo. Yo personalmente lo llamo el Impresionante Abrigo de Alucine (o algo por el estilo, en inglés suena mejor – Amazing Coat of Awesomeness)

ES-TAN-GUAY

Es el primer abrigo-abrigo que hago, el Minoru es al fin y al cabo una prenda de entretiempo. Paso directamen a la reseña:

Descripción del patrón:
Chaqueta forrada (y entreforrada) cortada en el ancho de la tela (crosswise). Tiene la solapa cortada al bies, pretina forrada con la misma tela, parte delantera y trasera cortada en una sola pieza formando pliegues delante y detrás, sin costuras laterales, bolsillos insertados, bajo curvado, cierre con presillas. El forro es visible en la parte de atrás.

Talla del patrón:
Americanas 6-22. Yo he cosido la 8 (38 española).

Una vez que terminaste de coserlo, ¿se parecía a la foto/dibujo del sobre?
Sips. En el patrón se recomienda coserlo con una tela de abrigo ligera como gabardina, jaquard o crepe, y el mío está hecho con una tela de invierno más gruesa, pero esencialmente es el mismo.

¿Fueron las instrucciones fáciles?
Si, en este caso las he seguido al pie de la letra, aunque tampoco era muy difícil (para ser abrigo, digo). Momento duda con los pliegues de atrás (son más profundos de lo que me esperaba). Y me ví todos los tutoriales sobre bolsillos insertados para al final hacerlos como decían las instrucciones. Guay.

Anda que no molan

¿Qué te gusta/no te gusta específicamente?
Me gusta: TODO, TODO, TODO (bueno, casi). Estilísticamente, porque es excéntrico e inicia conversaciones y piropos de desconocidos en plena calle. Costureramente, porque no hay técnicas de sastre como coser la entretela de las solapas a mano, ni ojales ribeteados. Pero sí he practicado los bolsillos insertados y lo he entreforrado (¿cómo se dice underlined?). Es decir, que he puesto una tela de algodón entre la tela principal y el forro, para que dé cuerpo.

Quizás debería haberlo planchado

No me gusta: Las mangas son ¾, para una chaqueta de fiesta como en la foto del patrón bien, pero para un abrigo de verdad, regulero. Y que la pieza de la vista principal sean más corta de lo que debería (un par de centímetros). Menos mal que me di cuenta a tiempo y pude modificarlo en la costura del centro atrás. Lo malo es que la costura ya no está lineada con el hilo, lo uno por lo otro.

La línea del mal

¿Qué tela has usado?
Una tela con aspecto de lana, pero sospecho que es 100% imitación. Por 5 euris no puede ser lana de verdad. El color ME ENCANTA y va perfecto con rojo, mi color favorito. Aparte, he usado forro guateado (ya se vende así) y entreforro de algodón (en realidad, una sábana vieja que guardé hace tiempo con este fín).

Rojo + Verde = LOVE

¿Has cambiado algo del patrón?
No, no he cambiado nada, incluso el forro está guateado tal como pide el patrón. Sólo le he añadido el entreforro, para que sea más apto para el invierno holandés.


¿Lo volverás a coser? ¿Lo recomiendas a otros?
No y quizás. No lo voy a volver a coser porque es muy, muy original y no necesito otro de este tipo. Lo recomiendo si te gusta el estilo, es super excéntrico y la diversión está garantizada. A mí me pone de buen humor sólo de verlo colgado en el armario.

Conclusión:
Un abrigo divertido, que da color a los días grises. Ha habido señoras muy señoreadas que me han parado por la calle para preguntarme de quién es (“mío” respondí yo, impagable). Y nunca me he sentido tan observada que cuando lo llevo, literalmente, niñas pequeñas con la boca abierta.

Que no me hayan sacado en Vogue ...

Two years! Two full years of blog silence! Is there anybody out there still paying attention? No? Good!

I'm not going to bore you with the story of my life, it's not relevant and not that interesting. I'll just say that my current job has sucked the joy out of me in the last 2 years and I'm so ready to move on (Got business proposals? Yes please!). Oh well, at least I have a job, I shouldn't complain, really.

So I'm picking up this blog just where I left it. I really, really want to publish this review because I'm so darn proud of this coat, the Pamella Roland Vogue pattern V1332. Also know as turtle or beetle coat, the you're not going to wear this outside, are you coat, and the really, really?? coat. To all my mockers I answer #LOL! and #damnrightIwill, hashtags and all. I personally refer to it as the Amazing Coat of Awesomeness. And it's actually my first proper coat (kind of), the Minoru was more of an autumn jacket.

Pattern Description:
Underlined, lined jacket (cut crosswise) has bias collar, self-lined yokes, front and back cut-in-one forming front and back pleats, no side seams, welt pockets, shaped hemline, and snap closing. Lining shows on back hemline.

Pattern Sizing:
6-22. I made my usual 8.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes it did. The pattern is actually meant for a lighter fabric (Jacquard, Crepe Back Satin and Lightweight Gabardine) whereas mine is a fairly heavy weight. Other than that 100% the same.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, they're quite easy. I had a head stratch moment with the folds in the back, but nothing serious. I also saw all welt pockets tutorials on the web, before following the actual instructions from the pattern, this is a first.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes: EVERYTHING (almost). Stylistically, because it's excentric, it's a conversation starter and gets you heaps of unsolicitations. Re: sewing and construction, because while it's a full-on coat, there is almost no tailoring (no hand stitches at the collar, no bound buttonholes, etc). I have made welt pockets (a first!) and underlined the whole thing (basting main fabric to underlining *before* cutting K-King styles!).

Iron? Whatchu talkin bout?

Dislikes: Main facing and front/back pieces are not quite the same length. If you notice on time, it's easy to add lenght to the facing (just use the main pattern as a guide). If not, you could adjust the CB seam, but then the main fabric is not on grain anymore. Guess which one I did – yep CB seam adjustment.
The ¾ sleeves are cute in a party coat, but not really apt for real Dutch winters.

Off-grain back - sorry?

Fabric Used:
From afar looks wool, but at 5 EUR a meter at the market, it's definitively man-made. The colour is GORGEOUS, and looks best paired with bright red. The pattern asks you to use batting+lining, but coincidentally I had bought just enough quilted lining to use it here. For underlining, an old cotton sheet that I had saved for this very purpose.

Red + Green = LOVE

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
No, I haven't changed anything. I've just added the underlining to make it wearable during these cold Dutch winters.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
No and maybe. I'm not going to sew it again because it's such a distinct design, I don't need a second one. I'd recommend it if you like the style, it requires a certain degree of madness, but the fun is guaranteed.

Conclusion:
It's a fun coat, every morning I look at it and it makes me incredibly happy. I had once a very proper lady asking me on the street whose coat was this (“mine” I answered – priceless). I've never felt so observed as when I weart it, I've seen open mouthed little girls staring at me, so it's not for the heart-fainted. Love it.

V1183 - Kay Unger camping dress

Parece como si no hubiera hecho nada en todo el verano y en realidad no he parado. Voy a intentar bloguear todo lo que hay por ahí pendiente, empezando por este UFO terminado en Mayo cuando el MMM12.

Este patrón es de Vogue, V1183, de Kay Unger, que me parece una diseñadora muy americana, no sé por qué. Yo cuando me pongo este vestido me siento Melanie Griffith en Armas de Mujer, una glamurosa mujer de negocios, agenda y móvil en mano, lo cual se corresponde más bien poco con la realidad.

Estado el UFO:

Vestido en su totalidad cortado y algunas partes ya cosidas.

Atranque:

Desde el principio este vestido era una prueba del patrón, la tela verde militar es del mercata, con la textura de una tienda de campaña (es repelente a los líquidos, pregúntame cómo lo sé). ¿Por qué en el nombre de Dior elegí esa tela para hacer una prueba? Ni idea, pero da una idea de mi fe en el proyecto.

La cuestión es que justo esa semana me hicieron una carta de color (esto es tema para otro post) y lo primero que me dicen es: los colores militares o de camuflaje (arena, verdes) te quedan FATAL. Me hizo tanto impacto la vehemencia con que lo dijeron, que cuando volví a casa metí el vestido en una bolsa y ahí se ha quedado casi un año.

Solución:

Pues coserlo y punto. En un momento dado me dije, ni verde ni historias, a terminar ese vestido, hombre ya. Y en un par de horas estaba terminado (desde que estoy terminando UFOs el ritmo de producción va a unas velocidades supersónicas).

Estoy muy contenta, porque me ha quedado bien a la primera y sin dramas ¡palmadita en la espalda! Le hubiera metido un pelín al pecho, pero vamos, que por lo demás bien. Ahora ya me he dado permiso a mi misma para hacerlo en una tela más festiva y con un color más acorde con mi complexión.

A veces el cuello se abre en vez de quedarse tieso hacia arriba ¿es grave? Yo creo que no.

No voy a hacer reseña en Pattern Review, porque ya hay bastantes, sólo decir que es un patrón facilito y versátil, dependiendo de la tela puede ser tanto de fiesta como para ir a trabajar.

Siguiente UFO: unos pantalones azul marino, para ese look marinero del verano pasado que este año se ha quedado obsoleto ¡bien!

Some may think I haven't touch my sewing machine in the last months - wrong! Actually I've been sewing more than ever, it's the blogging that got lazy. Today, let’s talk UFOs; I finished a few back in May for MMM12 and never got the chance to chat about them, so these posts are due.

This one is a Kay Unger Vogue pattern, V1183, a very American designer if you ask me. Why? I don't know exactly, but I have a Melanie Griffith in Working girl vibe here, a business babe going hurrily to the next meeting, smartphone in hand (this is obvs a fantasy, one I like to play when I step out of the house in this dress). Aaaanyway.

UFO's state:

This dress was cut and some parts already sewn.

Why I got stuck:

The silliest of reasons. This was supposed to be a wearable muslin, the army green fabric was bought for no money at the market. It has the texture and feel of a camping tent (I'm not joking, it's even water repellent - ask me how I know this). Why on earth did I 1. buy this fabric? and 2. decide to actually use it? Who knows, I probably didn't expect too much of this pattern and/or I'm colour blind. The point is that just that very week a colleague made my color chart, and the first thing she says is: stay away from army colors (green, sand, khakis). She said it so convinced and vehemently that when I came back home I put that half finished dress in a bag, where it's been hiding for a year.

Solution:

Color or no color, just sew it already! I love giving myself pep talks, am I the only one? I really wanted to try out the pattern, so why the f*ck not. It was ready in 2 hours and I've worn it countless times this summer.

I'm very, very happy, the fit is perfect without alterations. I'll pay attention to the bust area next time (I mean the center of the bust, it could have been sewn better), but hey. I wouldn't mind making it in a rich plum color which officially, according to the charts, looks better on me.

Sometimes the collar opens up instead of staying up, but that's all right with me.

I'm not going to make a review because there's tons of them in PR. But I do love this pattern and this won't be the last of it.

Tela Marinera - V1170 - Sailor Skirt

De nuevo tengo un par de cosas terminadas y poco tiempo para bloguearlas.

La primera es la falda de Rachel Comey, V1170, que ya han aparecido aquí y aquí.

Una faldita azul marino, para seguir con el tema marinero que llevo este verano. Ooh, que mona, que bien te queda etc, etc. Si, por detrás no está mal:

La cuestión es que me gusta mucho esta falda y puesto que es un fail simétrico, voy a hacer como si esos pliegues son a propósito y me la voy a poner con la frente bien alta.

Ahora ya en serio, ¿se podría modificar el patrón para evitarse los picos? ¿Para que fuese una suave curva? Porque quiero hacer la versión vestido(V1161) y me simplificaría la vida cantidad. Tendría que hacer pruebas, experimentar. Lo dejo para cuando vuelva de las vacaciones.

El vino en un barco, de nombre extranjero …

Once again I have finished some stuff and I just can’t find the time to post it.
First of all is this Rachel Comey skirt (V1170) that has been made everywhere (here and here, for example).

A navy blue skirt, going on with the sailor vibe this summer. Ooh, that’s cute, looks good on you, etc.. Yeah, the back was nicely done:

But the front:

Here’s the thing, I love this skirt. And since the major fail is quite symmetric, I’ll pretend that the unintentional pleats are a designer’s detail and just wear it.

Ok, now seriously, is there a way to avoid the pointy corners? Can I modify the front pattern to make it a soft curve? Because I want to make the dress version (V1161) and it’d make my life a lot easier. I hear you, do a muslin, invest time, well maybe in when I’m back from the holidays.

El vestido de Stella - Stella's dress

Este vestido también lleva una semana colgado en el perchero, pero ayer me lo puse por primera vez para salir a cenar y quería hacerle fotos en acción.

La inspiración es este vestido de Stella McCartney, que después ha sido copiado descaradamente por Zara y otras cadenas de ropa. Y por mí obviamente.

La idea de hacer un vestido blanco me rondaba desde hace tiempo, y el reto de la semana pasada en The Sew Weekly (en las carreras de Ascot, en blanco y negro) fue el empujoncito que necesitaba para ponerme ya en serio. Me falta un fascinator, un sombrerito de esos minúsculos que lleva la gente a las ocasiones elegantes. He visto un mini sombrero de copa en Accessorize que lleva mi nombre escrito.

Para hacerlo he hecho un frankenpattern, es decir, mezclar elementos de dos patrones distintos. El cuerpo está basado en el Vogue Vintage V1136 que ya hice el verano pasado y la falda es del Macaron de Colette.

Hmm, el piqué blanco es un poco recio y las pinzas francesas se han quedado … puntiagudas… después de una buena sesión de plancha esto se va a quedar como está y que salga el sol por Antequera.

He modificado la espalda para hacerla de una pieza, en vez de las bandas cruzadas, pero respetando el diseño original. De la falda no he cambiado nada, simplemente he omitido los bolsillos.

¿Se puede ir de punta en blanco (literalmente) en bicicleta? Por supuesto, ¿acaso lo dudabas?

This dress has been hanging in my closet for one week already, but I wore it yesterday for the first time and I wanted to take outside pictures.

The inspiration for this dress came from this Stella McCartney's dress, which has been since copied shamelessly by Zara and other RTW chains. And me obviously.

I’ve been thinking about white dresses for a while and the challenge at The Sew Weekly last week (Ascot races, black and white) was the gentle push I needed. I so need a fascinator right now! I saw a mini top hat in Accessorize that has my name written all over it.

Basically this is a frankenpattern, quite simple actually. The body is based on the Vintage Vogue V1136 that I did last summer and the skirt is of course from Colette’s Macaron.

The fabric is a stiffy white pique, and despite a long ironing session the French darts are still ... pointy. Whatever, I’ll pretend I’m French or something.

The back pattern is modified, I’ve combined the 2 pieces to make it one, but respecting the original design. The skirt is exactly the same, I only omitted the pockets.

Would you dare to go all dressed up (high heels!) on a bicycle? But of course, did you doubt that?

MMM11 - 21/22/23

¿Cómo combinar un vestuario compuesto de vestidos con un trabajo que requiere mucho movimiento físico y al mismo tiempo estar presentable? Pues ese es el dilema al que me enfrento cada mañana al abrir el armario. Si es un vestido que requiere tacones está bien para recibir clientes, pero no para llevar cajas grandotas a correos. Si es un atuendo en plan casual cruzo los dedos para que no venga ningún cliente importante ese día.

Hablando de los "avíos" (en mi tierra eso se usa para hablar de la comida, ¡no de la ropa!), ¿puedes creer que hasta hace un año los cinurones casi no existían en mi armario?

Día 21 - Terapia de color one more time para el lunes por la mañana (Burda 05/2009/117, ya visto en el día 8).

Día 22 - No debería ponerme este vestido (V1150) para el trabajo, me da vergüenza ajena de mí misma ...

Día 23 - Parece que trabajo en una tienda de segunda mano o en una tienda de productos ecológicos, menudo momento hipster. Sólo me falta un búho de fieltro de Etsy en la cabeza para ir gafapastosa total. Por cierto, me encantan los hombros de este M5975.

Menos mal que el tiempo está primaveral y luce un solecico que se agradece ¡Eso es todo, amigos!

How to fit a me-made wardrobe into a job that requires a lot of running and physical movement but at the same time you have to look neat and representative to welcome customers? This is my daily dilemma. A dress that requires high heels looks good, but try to bring a big box to the post office walking on those. If I'm dressed more casual I cross fingers hoping that no important customer would show up that day.

Talking accesories for a minute, can you believe that one year ago I didn't wear any belts? Yeah, me neither.

Día 21 - Colour therapy one more time, monday morning redux (Burda 05/2009/117, already worn on day 8).

Día 22 - I really shouldn't wear this dress (V1150) to work, I feel quite ashamed of myself. Alas, my choice is limited.

Día 23 - Hipster alert, I'm only missing a felt owl from Etsy on my hair! I could be working in a second hand record store or in an organic grocery store. Don't lie, you're thinking the same. Love the shoulders of this M5975, though.

At least the weather is cooperating here and there's a bit of sunshine. That's all folks!
