MMM11 - Conclusiones

**See previous post for conclusions in English**

*A buen entendedor pocas palabras bastan.

MMM11 - Conclusions (English)

**The Spanish post will appear in a second**

Why wait until next January if you can start a new life in April? There is some stuff going on on a personal level that I won’t discuss here, but let's say my house is for sale and I am about to enter a new phase in my thirties*.

But let’s get to the point, the conclusions of MMM11. You may have noticed by the tone of recent posts that I finished it a bit stressed. It may seem that I didn't like to participate and really isn’t so. First things first, the positive stuff:

- I sew according to my (questionable) taste and I definitively go my own way here. My handmade wardrobe is impractical, eccentric and totally inappropriate to my daily life. But! Utilitarian sewing bores me to death and it’s not my cup of tea. Conclusion: I should adapt my life to my clothes and not otherwise.

- This year I've gone from sewing, hmm, stuff which I prefer not to remember to make more than decent garments, technically speaking, even aesthetically interesting (category "dresses that start a conversation" – I mean this literally because that has happened to me a few times this month). Conclusion: next year I hope I to have learned many more techniques, I'll have mastered the serger and who knows if I'll have a four stars Burda blazer. Although I'd settle if I manage to finish certain unmentionable garments.

- Limitation requires the use of the imagination. The number of garments has been exactly 14 and it’s been a challenge to dress myself in the mornings, trying to give a new twist to this dress or that one. Belts, tights, shoes, I could have not done it without accessories.

Now the not so pleasant ones:

- This has nothing to do with fashion but it’s more of a psychological issue - the limitation mentioned above gives me the creeps. I’m used to have a really full closet (or two) at my disposal, and having to spend a month with only 14 items was almost, almost a trauma. I actually follow Cargo Cult Craft and The wardrobe reimaged, lovely ladies that have imposed themselves a year of rationing clothes, like women did in Britain during the Second World War. Not only do I deeply admire these women, but now I know it'd be absolutely impossible for me to voluntarily impose such austerity on myself. BUT! I don’t want to go all 2012 paranoid here, but what if tomorrow we find ourselves in this situation? I’m telling you, these things keep me awake at night. Conclusion: The last days were really challenging, being forced to wear certain predetermined clothes and not what I had wished to wear. Let’s think positively for a second, I am terribly privileged and I won’t say never again say "I have nothing to wear " (ok, maybe never is a very strong word, but not that often).

- Truth to be told, the previous point is not exactly true. Hand washing it's even worse! I don’t dare to put my clothes in the washing machine. I’ll die if I ruin in one hour what took days to make, no way! On the other hand, having to wash by hand daily it’s very annoying and bordering on “why did I ever agree on doing this”, which is totally besides the point, but has an impact on my mood, not a positive one.

Probably there are more conclusions somewhere in my grey mass, but right now I am not focused at all. This blog will suffer a bit the coming period, I may not write as often as I’d like to. By the way, there is a dress that I finished about two weeks ago and it’s still hung up waiting its turn (talk about adapting my life to my clothes).

Also, where’s my mojo?

*This is self explanatory, I think.

POR FIN - MMM11 - FINALLY

Español
English

Finally it's over! My conclusions and other unimportant thoughts will follow this weekend.

Day 29 - A symphony in grey with V1119 ...

Day 30 - Burda 01/2011/128, back in display! Doing what I do best, checking stuff in the interwebs (well, here i'm just starting the laptop, but you get the idea).

Day 31 - I wanted to say goodbye to the month with a bang, but the surprise was, hmm, not sewing related. So, say hello to my new bolide! I'll be roaming the Dutch streets with this cute thing, watch out! Oh, yeah, and that Patrones mango blouse, too.

Have a great weekend everyone!

MMM11 - 24-28

Español
English

- rallado = descarado (comorl?)

Is it me or is March the never ending month? I can't see the end of it, to tell the truth. I have many things to tell but not today, plus I'm feeling like a broken record, repeating myself. So, without further delay ...

Day 24 - Vogue Vintage dress (V1136)

Day 25 - As usual, friday afternoons are really the silliest moment of the week. I'm even capable of doing a great Walk like an Egyptian impersonation *and* publish it on the interwebs, go figure. So yes, the Joannie dress (SIM 2337) is ready to party. Also, a kitteh.

I've skipped this weekend. No sewing, no blogging, no MMM11.

Day 28 - I'm really liking these Burda pants (10/2010/124) more and more, style wise.

MMM11 - 21/22/23

How to fit a me-made wardrobe into a job that requires a lot of running and physical movement but at the same time you have to look neat and representative to welcome customers? This is my daily dilemma. A dress that requires high heels looks good, but try to bring a big box to the post office walking on those. If I'm dressed more casual I cross fingers hoping that no important customer would show up that day.

Talking accesories for a minute, can you believe that one year ago I didn't wear any belts? Yeah, me neither.

Día 21 - Colour therapy one more time, monday morning redux (Burda 05/2009/117, already worn on day 8).

Día 22 - I really shouldn't wear this dress (V1150) to work, I feel quite ashamed of myself. Alas, my choice is limited.

Día 23 - Hipster alert, I'm only missing a felt owl from Etsy on my hair! I could be working in a second hand record store or in an organic grocery store. Don't lie, you're thinking the same. Love the shoulders of this M5975, though.

At least the weather is cooperating here and there's a bit of sunshine. That's all folks!

MMM11 - 18 & 20

Español
English

Only 10 days to go! I find these last weeks the most difficult, trying every morning to find new and exiciting ways to wear my limited collection. I don't want to repeat myself and new accesories only take you so far.

Day 18 - I was going to a party, so Donna Karan's V1120 dress was in order.

I love this dress! With the black jacket (from Vanilla, a lovely Dutch brand) looks pretty sleek, the print is not so, hmm, distracting. At the party I got asked where I'd bought it and I was very proud (this is an understatement) to tell them I've made it myself. Lots of oohs and aahs ensued, I think I'm now known as "M. the sewing girl".

Oh don't tell me you don't get all prettified if your photo is going to be all over the interwebs!

Day 19 - day off. I've been cleaning and sewing, it's a dirty work but somebody's got to do it. So yeah, that's how I spend my saturdays, quite sad actually.

Día 20 - Well, it's not so sad if I manage to finish a dress, oh yeah!

This is M5975, sadly OOP so I'm not going to bother with a review. It's a knit pattern, pretty straightforward and just pretty. I'm still having problems sewing knits (only) with the serger, specially the curved lines are a nightmare.

Actually this dress has been hanging on Patty for a week. I wanted to finish it but I notice that is a tad see through.

So yesterday I bought some white elastic cotton and lined it fully. So now it's not a wearable muslim anymore but a proper dress. All summery and stuff, so a cardi is in order these days but I'll wear this one to death this summer, I know it already.

MMM11 - 16 & 17

Español
English

Vale, esto no era una pose Cindy, mas bien parece que estoy bailando Groove is in the heart...

Aren't you feed up with the hand in the hip and silly smile photos? Because I am! I didn't think too much about it, until I saw that I had the same pose in 4-5 days in a row - this madness must stop! From now on I'll delight you with my crazy ass Cindy Crawford poses (once again, my pop culture references betray my age).

Day 16: Burda skirt + Mexx blouse

Ok, maybe this was not my best Cindy pose, it looks like I'm dancing Groove is in the heart...

By the way, I find very funny when people tell me oh, you sew so well, well HA-HA, so not true. It's just that I'm handy with my camera and I usually don't show these things:

Yes, this skirt not only does weird things around the hips but also it's about 4cms too big at the waist - major sewing fail!

Day 17/03 - Flower trousers + blouse and cardi from Zara.
I think I've found the right combo for these pants. A white blouse or t-shirt and come summer, leather sandals. Right now it's a cardi or freeze, the weather is still chilly.

Parting shot of a Rock Star moment - I'm not in the mood for sewing or blogging, have you notice? Now, about that Guiness ...

MMM11 - 13-14 &15

These days I'm totally uninspired, so here's what's been going on:

Sunday 13/03 - I didn't went out of the house, I was already giving up on a MMM day, but I remembered about this polo t-shirt. I made it last summer, as a test garment for polo collars but I never got round to post about it. Despite the amateurish look, actually I've worn it quite a bit last summer holidays.

Monday 14/03 - Yesterday was as boring as it gets, please don't ask too much from me a monday morning, just ain't gonna happen. So this is the no yoking Burda skirt, that looks weird at the hips, lest you stand completely statuesque straight up. My funky nail polish is making my day, though.

Tuesday 15/03 - This Mango tunic (blogged here), is the last garment of the first round, from now on it's all reruns.

MMM11-12 Pantalones excéntricos - Eccentric pants

Español
English

Pattern review here.

This is me thinking if the flower trousers were such a good idea.

That’s not true, they’re exactly how I envisioned them, copied inspired by a Zara pair that I’ve seen recently. Truth to be told, they remind me of a pair I used to like when I was 12 back in the 80’s (yeah, I’m that old). This is Burda’s 10/2010/124 (tall sized pattern, by the way), with minor modifications. The flower fabric is all right, I love that, but the style is not for me. The backside is ok, but they’re too roomy on the front, and when I sit I may as well be wearing a diaper (the pattern is like that, so it’s not a construction mistake).

See, that’s the problem whith sewing. If I see something at a shop and try it on I can see right away if the shape, cut or fit is right for me . If I sew them, I’ll be spending many hours on that project only to discover at the end of the journey that they’re not right for me. Maybe if I redraft the front part it’ll be ok, but I don’t have the motivation or time to do so.

Oh well, not all is lost. For a mere 6€ (5€ for fabric and 1€ zipper) I’ve got an eccentric pair of trousers (was I an English lady in a previous life?) and I’ve tried new techniques. The “discovery of the year” award goes to Sandra Betzina’s tutorial on Threads for the easiest front fly zipper technique ever. I have followed the whole process literally frame by frame and boy, does it work! Yes, that has messed up the facings and internal tab placing, but that’s not important right now.

And the belt tabs are not bad either, right? Now that the zipper issue is out of the way I may even consider going into Marlene Dietrich pants territory, all high waisted and flared, sailor style. Yay for techniques!

MMM11-10 Vintage primaveral - Spring vintage

Español
English

Today I've received 3 (!!) compliments from customers visiting our showroom, I keep going strong on this "weird dresses week" as my colleague said. This is because our boss is on holidays so I can wear whatever I want without much fuss or explanations. Next week I'll come back to my usual grey self.

This has been mi first and so far my last incursion into vintage. Not the real one, sure, but the Vogue reissues. This is V1136, that was properly documented here. One of the few times that I've been 100% satisfy with the result, and yet, today is the second time wearing it, why? is it the weird "little monsters" pattern?

So, I'm not going into details of when I'll finish my other vintage dress, but let's say it'll be somewhere in the fall, if at all. The serger is already rethreaded in white spring colors, I've moved on.

MMM11-09 Vestido 4 estaciones - 4 Seasons dress

Español
English

This poor dress, McCalls 6069, is literally falling apart. The shoulders fall every time, the strap I sewed back then is completely stretched out, so not holding the shoulders like it should. Even better, I transferred the pattern with red marker and it has not gone away despite many washes (note to self: do not ever use red marker again!). And despite all, it’s one of the garments that I’ve worn more often, summer and winter, the whole year round.

It took me a whole 4 hours to sew (a record!) and I’ll sew it again as soon as I find the right fabric (perfect for bold big prints like this) because 1. It’s super easy and 2. I look great wearing it, if I may say so myself!

PS. About linings and undergarments. Yes, I have not sewn linings on my dresses because I roll(ed) like that, but that’s about to change. In the meanwhile I’m enjoying wearing underdresses, slips, whatever you call them, a great discovery.
