¿Estáis participando en el Me-Made-May 12? Si es así, ¡mucha suerte a todas! Aquí chez Bullock estoy maquinando para hacer las fotos un poco divertidas, porque si no menudo aburrimiento, para mí y para los demás. Sólo voy a dedicarle un post al final del mes, pero quien quiera seguir el reto que se pase por el Flickr del grupo.

Estoy a dos días de irme de vacaciones y voy terminando projectos a toda castaña (eso es lo bueno de los UFOs, que al estar medio terminados voy a velocidades supersónicas). De momento tengo listos: 2 vestidos, 1 pantalon y 2 tops (uno de ellos el Prendrell de Sewaholic y ES PRECIOSÍSIMO). Todo será fotografiado en Barcelona, pero no creo que me de tiempo a actualizar el blog durante las vacaciones.

Me voy a hacer la maleta, ¡hasta luego Lucas!

A domestic goddess, I ain't.

I'm going on holidays this friday (Barcelona!) so I'm finishing UFO's at the speed on light (that's the good thing about UFO's, most of them are almost ready!). I can't hardly believe what I've accomplished lately: 2 dresses, 1 pair of trousers and 2 tops (one of them is the long due Prendrell from Sewaholic and IT'S SO PRETTY). I'll make proper photos in Barcelona, that Mediterranean light is incredible, but probably the blog will be updated after the holidays.

Antes de empezar: he estado jugando con los colores para intentar reflejar mejor el rojo tomate del vestido y ahora parece que acabo de salir de la fábrica de Willy Wonka, mis disculpas por los colores psicodélicos.

Este patrón Burda 06-2010-126 lo empecé en Agosto del 2011, cuando estaba de vacaciones en Almería. Tenía ganillas de tener un vestido rojo que es mi color favorito*, pero lo que iba a ser un proyecto rápido se convirtió en una pesadilla.

Resultado: casi un año guardado en el cajón de los desastres y un cabreo supino cada vez que me acuerdo (¡¡esta es la razón por la que hay que hacer modelos de prueba!!). En vez de enfardarme, he intentado canalizar la energía negativa en hacer algo útil, la motivación para terminarlo. Como tanto el patrón como la tela/color me encantan, me alegro de haberle dado una segunda oportunidad.

Estado el UFO:

Vestido en su totalidad cortado y con hilos flojos (cosa que no hago nunca y fíjate por dónde ha sido bastante útil). Parte de arriba cosida.

Atranque:

Esta foto habla por sí misma.

Lo que es la pieza de la cintura bien, pero la parte del pecho un desastre. Dos razones: este patrón está pensado para un chifón o una tela finísima. Un pliegue más o menos no importa, incluso se queda más bonito. Pero al hacerlo con un algodón normal (peso medio) no puedes poner tanto frunce. Combina este detalle con el hecho de que los patrones del Burda que están pensados para una copa C, desastre asegurado.

Aparte, no quería poner el pequeño frunce raro del hombro, pero aún quitándolo, el ratio hombro-pecho es extremadamente largo (o el ratio de mi cuerpo es muy corto, o combinación de ambos). La cuestión es que le he quitado unos 4 cms. tanto a la pieza de delante como a la de atrás.

Solución:

Me lo probé una vez más y empecé a marcar todo con alfileres (esto no es fácil, alfiletearse una misma). Con las modificaciones correspondientes y con ayuda de este post, he redibujado la parte de delante, que era la que más me preocupaba.

Después de hilvanar todo con las nuevas medidas, he ajustado también un poquitín la parte de atrás (quitarle unos 3 cms en el hombro). Al subir todo hacia arriba, hay que bajar la sisa un par de centímetros, lógicamente. Ahora todo está donde debería, casi perfecto. Hay un pliegue en la sisa que me acabo de dar cuenta ahora viendo las fotos, ni idea de dónde ha salido y como que me da igual.

*El rojo está muy presente en mi armario: chaquetas, abrigo, pantalón, rebecas. Y mi objetivo para esta primavera es encontrar unos zapatos rojos de ante como estos. Me gusta primero y principal porque me queda bien; pero aparte, tiene significado a varios niveles: rojo es el color con el que identifico a España (no voy a entrar en simbología, pero ya me entendeis), y rojo es el color del dragón, mi signo en el horóscopo chino. Es decir, que con este vestido estoy hecha una Carmen de España (¡no la de Merimèe!), echándo fuego por la boca, tipo Ojos de Brujo.

Disclaimer: I've been playing with the colors, trying to get the real tomato red of this dress and now everything looks like I'm working at Willy Wonka's, sorry about the psychedelic colors.

I started this dress, based on Burda 06-2010-126, last summer in Almería. I loved the idea of having a red dress, being my favourite color*, but what was supposed to be a fun quick summer project turned into a nightmare.

Result: it's been hidden away almost a year in the ufo pile and I get angry with myself every time I think about it (and this is the reason why I need to make muslins!). So, I've tried to channel that negative energy into something useful, the motivation to finish it up. I like both the pattern and the fabric/color very much, so I'm quite happy to have persevered.

UFO's state:

All pieces were cut and marked. Upper part and midriff were machine basted.

Why I got stuck:

The picture speaks for itself.

The tucks on the midriff part just had to be sewn but that upper part, I was speechless. Of course afterwards is quite easy to see: first, the pattern is meant for chiffon or a very light and soft fabric. And yes, thin fabric can be gathered much more tightly than (medium-)heavy fabric, so I had to shave off quite some fabric. Plus Burda patterns are often drafted for bigger cups than mine, so yeah, recipe for disaster.

Beside this, I wanted to skip the shoulder flower/detail/whateverthatis, which should be easy because it's marked on the pattern. Yet, the shoulder-apex ratio is extremely long (or my body's is extremely short - or both). Point is, I ended up shortening about 4 cms on both the front piece. So if you have a small or short torso, better check the proportions on paper, it's all I'm saying.

Solution:

I tried it on again, this time armed with pens and pins (it's *hard* to pin myself!). After everything was re-marked and with the help of this post, I redrawed the front piece, the most problematic.

I basted everything again, fitted the back piece a bit (shove 3 cms off at the shoulder). Since I was pulling the whole thing up, I lowered the armscye a good 2-3 cms. Now everything is sitting where it should (kinda), and it's even bra-friendly - yay! (Now that I'm checking the photo's, I'm noticing a weird fold when you look at it from the side, how did that happen? whatevs)

Tuck details and pretty insides - and no, my own camera can't make a decent photo for the life of it.

And just for the fun of it.

*My wardrobe is full of red: blazers, coat, trousers, cardis. And I'm looking for suede red pumps like these . I like it firstly because it's a color that clearly suits me; but also it has other personal meaning: I identify red with Spain (on many levels, it's full of symbology) and red is also the dragon's colour, my Chinese horoscope sign. So I picture myself in full Carmen regalia, a real Spanish spitfire (yeah, I have a lively imagination).

Barcelona en Mayo

¡Gente!

En mayo tengo planeado un viaje a Barcelona y me gustaría preguntaros si conocéis tiendas de telas y/o mercerías que merezcan la pena visitar. Yo viví en BCN un año, pero en esa época no cosía así que no controlo mucho (lo que sí controlo son bares y restaurantes, pero eso no es importante en este momento).

¿Y revistas? Al final que ha pasado con el Burda ¿se sigue publicando? Y aparte del Burda y Patrones, ¿hay otra publicación que me pueda interesar? Y ya en plan curiosidad, la revista Cadena ¿de qué es exactamente, son patrones o telas? La he visto en Almería pero siempre está plastificada y me da palo pedirle al quiosquero que la abra.

¡Es oficial! De nuevo Zoe ha organizado un "mes hecho por mí":

Yo, Irene Bullock, me apunto como participante del Me-Made '12. Me comprometo a vestir una prenda hecha por mí cada día del mes de Mayo.

Y lo más importante, ¿quién se apunta? Para la gente que lleva cosiendo toda la vida y viste regularmente ropa hecha por ellas mismas, este tipo de retos no tienen misterio. Bueno, para mí es diferente, hay ciertos vestidos que me pongo a menudo, pero son la excepción y no la regla.

Aparte, hay dos cosillas relacionadas con este reto:

1. Son vaguetona en el diario, del tipo vaqueros + rebeca y tira millas. Así que voy a aprovechar para ponerme vestidos (o faldas) todo el mes de mayo. Cruzo los dedos para que haga buen tiempo.

2. En vez de correr a la máquina de coser a empezar algo nuevo, voy a aprovechar el mes de Abril para terminar UFOs de una vez por todas. Hay un montón, he aquí un par de ejemplos:

It's official, people! Me-Made-May '12, organized by the lovely Zoe, is back!

I, Irene Bullock, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '12. I endeavour to wear a me-made garment each day for the duration of May 2012.

And, more importantly, who's in? I know some of you, long time sewists, wear me-made stuff on daily basis (lucky girls!), but for people like me it's quite a challenge to participate in a MMM month.

Two things related to this:

1. I'm often lazy when it comes to my daily wear, as in jeans, cardi, go! Well, no more: for this MMM12 I'm upping my game and I'll try to wear only dresses. I hope that the unpredictable Dutch weather will cooperate this year *sigh*

2. Instead of running to the sewing machine to make new stuff, I'm going to spend most of April finishing UFOs. And there are many of them, here's just a sample:

Recientemente he recibido una nominación al Liebster Award - ¡el primer premio como bloguera! Y encima me ha llegado por partida doble.

Primero fue Molly de Toferet's Empty Bobbin. Su blog se cruzó en mi camino cuando estaba buscando información sobre el Macaron de Colette y me encontré con esta versión; después las dos participamos en un mes Me-Made. Ahora mismo está cosiendo su vestido de boda, eso sí que es im-presionante (en 2 palabras).

Y poco después Lynn también me nominó. Conocí a Lynn el año pasado cuando estuvo recorriendo los Paises Bajunos en bicicleta con sus colegas blogueras Cidell y Trena. Lynn, que en las distancias cortas es aun más encantadora, no pierde comba y está apuntada a toda clase de retos y sewalongs ¿De dónde saca el tiempo para todo?

Recently I was lucky enough to have received a nomination for the Liebster Award - my first! Weirdly, I was nominated by 2 lovely gals almost at the same time, thank you ladies.

First was Molly from Toferet's Empty Bobbin. I came across her blog a while ago when I got hook to her version of the Macaron and later our paths crossed again as a fellow participant of the Me-Made months. Right now she's sewing her own wedding dress, so impressive!

And then I got this lovely comment from Lynn. I met her last year when she visited the Netherlands with fellow bloggers Cidell and Trena. Lynn, who's lovely, keeps herself busy with all kind of challenges and sewalongs and I sure have no idea where she gets the time to participate in all that!

Hace un par de semanas estaba yo un poco hasta el moño de la costura y en esos casos sólo se puede hacer una cosa: irse a Zara y/o Mango. Para mí es terapeutico, y tiene dos funciones: 1. inspirarme y 2. horrorizarme al probarme las prendas y pensar mejor lo hago yo misma (que no es lo mismo que decir esto lo hago yo mejor, pero ya me entendéis). Es decir, me vuelven las ganas de coser, casi con urgencia.

Asi que entro en un Zara y lo primero que me encuentro es este vestido:

Por poco salgo corriendo de la tienda, en línea recta a la colección de patrones y en concreto este Simplicity 2282. Puede que yo haya hecho ciertos comentarios sobre prendas con un volante en el trasero, pero ser consecuente nunca fue mi punto fuerte. Además, por la forma en la que está diseñado, casi no da pie a arrugarse.

Con las movidas que he tenido me digo, primero lo hago en una tela de mercata y después ya hablamos. Y de repente los nubarrones mentales desaparecieron y en 3 sesiones de 2-3 horas tenía listo un vestido de puta madre (modestia aparte, pero es que es verdad). Con esto de los patrones no se puede generalizar, pero Simplicity tiene un corte que se adapta a mi 100% y no al revés, así da gusto coser.

Descripción del patrón:
Vestido con costuras princesa, con variaciones en las mangas. Cuello de pelo o collar de tela opcionales. También el péplum o las tapetas de bolsillos falsos son opcionales.

Talla del patrón:
Americana 4-20 – He cosido la talla 8, mi habitual en Simplicity.

Una vez que terminaste de coserlo, ¿se parecía a la foto/dibujo del sobre?
Sí, totalmente.

¿Fueron las instrucciones fáciles?
Bastante. Son las típicas instrucciones de patrón de sobre, paso a paso con dibujos. Yo me he desviado en los puntos 10-12 que son los siguientes:

En las instrucciones te dice que debes coser primero el costado al centro delantero y después ambas piezas a la falda, formando un pico. Yo lo he hecho al revés, he cosido el costado a la falda y después verticalmente al centro delantero. Sale mejor, porque aprovecha que que hay un pliegue en la falda. Todo esto no tiene sentido si no tienes las instrucciones del patrón delante, sorry.

¿Qué te gusta/no te gusta específicamente?
Me gusta todo, este patrón ha estado en la lista desde tiempos inmemoriales. Del patrón en sí, que es perfecto tal como es, no ha necesitado modificaciones de ningún tipo. Y estilísiticamente, que el resultado es hiperfemenino.

¿Qué tela has usado?
Tela maluja, porque quería probar el patrón.

¿Has cambiado algo del patrón?
Nada, nothing, rien. Trazado, cortado, cosido, acabado.

¿Lo volverás a coser? ¿Lo recomiendas a otros?
Si lo voy a volver a coser, definitivamente. Patrones que se ajustan a mi cuerpo como un guante valen su peso en oro. Ahora, con péplum o sin ... eso no lo sé. El volantillo es muy de ahora asi que es o este verano o sin volante.

Lo recomiendo, y ciertamente a las que como yo son del tipo planicie.

Conclusión:
Unas gafas de sol, unos taconazos y con este vestido me pongo el mundo por montera. Y de eso se trata, ¿no?

A few weeks ago I was over it. Over sewing, fit, pattern modifications, you name it. In those days, I can only do one thing: go to a Zara and/or Mango. For me it’s therapeutic and it serves 2 purposes: 1. Get inspiration 2. Try stuff on and scream in horror, then think I better make this myself (which is not the same as I make this myself better, but please play along). What I mean is, the sewing mojo gets back – and quickly.

So I step into a Zara and the first thing I see is this cute dress:

Oh my, I’ve never walked faster home. Straight to the pattern collection, where is my Simplicity 2282? I may have made certain comments about patterns with ruffles on your behind, but being consequential was never my strong point. Never mind, this peplum is quite cleverly designed, and the fabric is man-made, luckily doesn’t wrinkle (or press!) at all.

With all the fitting woes lately I was wary, I thought to myself, let’s make a wearable muslin in a cheap fabric and we'll see. Like Kylie would say everything went from wrong to right and the stars came out and filled up the sky... In 3 sittings of 2-3 hours each I have an incredibly awesome dress (sorry about the lack of modesty, but it’s true!). You never know with patterns, but till now Simplicity’s fit has been consistently good for me and I’m thankful for that. And now for the review:

Pattern Description:
Misses dress with princess seams, sleeve variations and separate fur collar and bib necklace. Also optional peplum and flaps (fake pockets).

Pattern Sizing:
4-20 – I’ve made an 8, my usual at Simplicity.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes it did.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, really they are. I’ve only changed the order on steps 10-12 which are the following:

According to the instructions, you should sew first the side front to front (princess seams) and then both to the skirt to form a corner. I’ve made it differently, first sewn the side panel to the skirt and then both vertically to the front, including the pleat at the waist. This only makes sense if you have the instructions in front of you, sorry.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love it, it was in the to-do list for a while already. Pattern-wise because it fits out of the envelope, which I appreciate very much. And stylistically because the resulting dress it’s hyperfeminine.

Fabric Used:
Cheapo polyester, since it was meant to be a wearable muslin.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Nothing, nada, rien. Traced, cut, sewn and finished in about 6 hours.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes and yes. A fitting pattern is gold, I’ll make the most out of it. With or without peplum, it depends, it’s such a trendy detail that it can look dated soon. If I manage to sew one before the summer it’d be with peplum.

Conclusion:
Sunnies, high heels and feeling like a million dollars in a brand new dress. That’s what sewing is about, right?

¡POR FIN! Creo que no me voy a apuntar a ningún sewalong más, porque me estresan cantidubi (¡soy la mujer desactualizada!)

Punto xxx de la lista de resoluciones de enero: no dejar abandonados los proyectos a la mitad, aunque tenga cero ganas de seguir. Al final, a lo tonto no ha costado tanto trabajo hacerlo y me alegro de no haber tirado la toalla. Hago la reseña en plan Pattern Review:

Descripción del patrón:
Pastille es un patrón de vestido básico, con pinzas profundas en la parte de delante, escote en forma de corazón, pequeñas mangas incorporadas en el patrón y pliegues horizontales (¿lorzas?) en la falda.

Talla del patrón:
Americana 0-18 – He cosido la talla 2 en vez de la 4 (ver explicación abajo).

Una vez que terminaste de coserlo, ¿se parecía a la foto/dibujo del sobre?
Sí, creo que sí. Se me ha olvidado el lacito en el escote, otro día será.

¿Fueron las instrucciones fáciles?
Ni idea. Le di un vistazo rápido hace dos semanas antes de cortar y después he ido a mi bola.

¿Qué te gusta/no te gusta específicamente?
Del estilo me gusta que es un vestido simple, en el sentido de que se presta a variaciones. A veces tienes telas estampadas y buscas un patrón simple, pues éste puede ser lo que necesitas. Del patrón en sí, lo que no me gusta es que para ser un patrón relativamente simple, necesita bastantes modificaciones aquí y allá para que funcione.

¿Qué tela has usado?
Un algodón bastorro, casi tela de saco.

¿Has cambiado algo del patrón?
Si y no. No, no he cambiado nada, estilísticamente hablando. Bueno, tengo 2 pliegues en vez de 3 por falta de tela.

Modificaciones al patrón: para empezar ya había leído por todos sitios que las medidas de las tallas no corresponde con la realidad. Es decir, el tallaje está pallá. Yo lo que veía es que a todo el mundo le quedaba súper grande, asi que he empezado bajando una talla. Consecuencia: el busto medio bien (no demasiado ancho), pero la cintura, en concreto entre las dos pinzas de delante, es cómo si le hubiera metido unos 2-3 centímetros. No sé cómo explicarlo, pero la cuestión es que en vez de quedar por encima del ombligo que es lo normal, la cintura de este vestido queda justo donde terminan las costillas. No problem, no es ideal, pero puedo vivir con ello (por eso me sorprende cuando leo que la gente ha acortado la cintura ¿en serio?). La espalda … al principio un desastre. Después la subí para ponerla a la altura de la cintura de delante y de repente los problemas de la espada casi desaparecieron, un misterio. Aparte de todo esto, por haber sacado una talla más pequeña la cintura me está estrecha, estrecha. No a punto de explotar, pero casi.

Otra cosa que no entiendo es, siendo la falda una talla 2, ¿por qué me está enorme? En la foto se le ve a la muchacha con un vestido ajustado, pero a mí me baila de costillas para abajo.

¿Lo volverás a coser? ¿Lo recomiendas a otros?
Se me tiene que olvidar que he cosido y descosido la cintura unas 3 veces. Hmm, de momento no. Y si lo volviera a coser le pondría bolsillos, la falda los pide a gritos.

Lo recomiendo con modificaciones. Hay que hacerse a la idea de que tienes que hacer una prueba en una tela barata, modificarlo a gusto y ya después hacerlo con la tela de verdad, sólo digo eso.

Conclusión:
Para ser un patrón básico, menudo trabajo ha costado. Eso sí, me encanta la forma del escote y las mangas, no descarto reutilizar esos detalles en otros vestidos, incluso como top.

FINALLY! I think it’s the last time I commit to a sewalong, I’m stressing out for no reason.

One of the New Year resolutions was: don’t give up, don’t throw so easily the towel when it gets complicated, just do it already. Well, this dress has certainly tried my patience, but it’s done and I’m kinda over it. Let’s just review it, PR styles:

Pattern Description:
Pastille is a basic sheath dress, its details are a sweetheart neckline and horizontal pleats in the skirt. Also, the sleeves are build in the body pieces.

Pattern Sizing:
0-18, I made a 2 instead of my usual 4, see bellow.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes it did. I forgot the bow, maybe next time.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
No idea. I glanced at them before cutting the fabric and they were, in Colette style, quite easy.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the style very much, specially the sweetheart neckline and sleeves. I don’t care too much for the pleats, but they’re a nice detail. It should be useful when you have a busy print and are looking for a basic pattern. For the same reason, it should lend itself to variations, which is a plus in my book.

I dislike that the fit is a disaster. Sorry, but it’s true. I have yet to read a review of someone who says it fits out of the envelope. In my case it has cost me quite a bit of time and effort to make it work, it’s not impossible, just time consuming.

Fabric Used:
Very rough cotton (maybe it’s what they call broadcloth?). It was cheap, perfect for a wearable muslin like this one.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I’ve read everywhere that the fit was a bit off. What I saw was bodices that were just too large, so I cut size 2 instead of 4. The bosom problem seemed to be more or less solved, but as a result the waist at the front was waay too high (under my ribs high). So I had to balance out the rest of the waist, which surprisingly eliminated some of the excess/bunched fabric at the back (¿what?).

Anyway, the downsize resulted in a very tight waist (tiiight, as in the seams are bursting when I sit). Also, because of the raised waist, the darts in the skirt don’t fall on their natural place, but a few centimeters higher. Oh, and about the skirt, also cut in a 2, why is it so roomy? The model looks like a sheath dress, but mine looks much wider (from the ribs down, I mean).

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Not right now, I have first to forget that darn waist was sewn and ripped 3 times. I’d do it in a floral or busy print, maybe with piping at the waist and pleats – and pockets! The skirt screams pockets.

Conclusion:
Considering that is a basic sheath dress pattern, it has been quite a journey, simple it wasn’t. I do love the sweetheart neckline and the built-in cap sleeves, I wouldn’t mind using those details in some frankenpattern or even as a top.
