Mis cinco prendas favoritas - My five favorite items

El post anterior me ha salido un poco, hmm, amargo. Mi natural tendencia a la exageración a veces hace que se me vaya la mano. En fin, que ha sido un año de miércola, ¿quién no lo ha tenido alguna vez? Borrón y cuenta nueva.

Pasando a temas más alegres, os cuento una de las muchas adquisiciones del año pasado, el libro de Colette (¡mi tesoooro, mi tesooooro!)

¿No es preciosísimo? Ya sólo el diseño y los colores entran por los ojos. Y al comprarlo directamente en las rebajas de Acción de Gracias, me ha venido firmado "Haz algo precioso" - ¡A sus órdenes Mrs. Mitnick!

¡Pero es que el contenido es aún mejor! Debe ser el primer libro de costura que me estoy leyendo página a página, como si fuera una novela. No es que contenga grandes revelaciones o técnicas rompedoras, pero todo está escrito tan clarito, con tanto sentido común (el menos común de los sentidos), que me encuentro asintiendo con la cabeza diciendo “lo ha clavao”.

No voy ni por la mitad y ya hay muchos posts online sobre el libro, pero destaco una cosa del segundo capítulo, Editar tu estilo (en inglés aquí). Se te anima a que elijas 5 prendas de tu armario, las que más te gustan o las que más te pones. La idea es que si consigues identificar el común denominador o por qué te sientes bien llevando esas prendas, será más fácil elegir con más acierto los proyectos de costura. Es decir, coserás prendas que vas a ponerte porque te quedan bien, ya sea por los colores, el estilo, la talla, el corte, etc.

Estas son mis 5 prendas favoritas, algunas tienen rotación semanal, otras menos.

Vaqueros negros skinny Karen Millen - desde que me los compré hace unos meses vivo en ellos, me los pongo unas 2 veces por semana - mínimo ¿Qué me gusta exactamente? Que me hacen buen culo y que no se deforman aunque estés sentada todo el día. Perfectos.

Vestido negro Benetton - Es el vestido "necesito ir guapa", para cuando salgo al teatro o a cenar. Corto y ajustado pero sin ser ordinario. Perfecto.

Chaqueta negra Vanilia - Me la he puesto tantas veces que ya le tengo casi tirria. En cualquier caso, las chaquetas negras de todos los largos y formas abundan en mi armario, todas las temporadas, siempre.

Vestido morado Burda 01-2011-128 - Este es el “ponérselo y salir por la puerta”. Un patrón que, sinceramente, nunca pensé que usaría, con una tela baratuja, un experimento que salió bien. Me encanta, el color, el corte, la forma, es simple y es cómodo. Claro que es un espanta hombres*, pero me da igual.

Vestido estampado Mango - Este vestido de Mango es cortito, divertido y coqueto. Cuando me lo pongo puede pasar cualquier cosa y a menudo pasa. Mi hipster interior sale a pasear, me siento moderna y contemporánea (dos adjetivos que no me autoaplico casi nunca), quiero decir, que ni es típico de oficina ni de hace 3 temporadas. Me encanta y me lo pondría a diario.

¿Veo una tendencia? Negro, negro, negro, ¡cómo mi humor y mi estado de ánimo! No creo que haya cosido nada en negro, pero podría rellenar 3 maletas con telas negras del stock. Es fácil por las mañanas, va con todo, es seguro, sin complicaciones. Desde el punto de vista de la costura, es como un lienzo en blanco que te permite experimentar con las formas y el corte, aparte de camuflar bien los errores. Claro que necesitas buena luz natural para coserlo o al menos una lámpara potente. El negro es mi color base, está claro (u oscuro, jajaja, vivan los chistes malos). Lo sustituyo a menudo por el gris o azul marino, pero el negro sigue siendo mi favorito. También es evidente que me gustan los colores lisos, no estampados y las formas simples y minimalistas (esto es herencia directa de los 90, cuando Calvin Klein y Donna Karan me parecían lo max).

Ahora, basado en lo anterior, ¿porque tengo tantas telas de colores chirri, rosas, turquesas, estampados, en mi armario? Eso ya es tema para otro post.

Last post has turned out a bit, hmm, bitter, maybe more than I intended. Being Spanish, I like to exaggerate a lot a bit, it’s just in my blood. So it’s been a sh*t year, who hasn’t had one of those? Next!

Moving on to happier subjects, let’s talk about one of my recent acquisitions, the Colette Sewing Handbook ! Are you ready for yet another gloating post? Are you sick of reading about it? Yeah, I was too, until I got it in my hands (my preeecious, my preeecious!)

Isn’t it pretty? What a design, and those candy colours – And since I bought it directly from them, at the Thanksgiving sale, I got it signed from Mrs. Mitnick herself! Well, yes, I'll make something lovely, that's a promise.

I adore the look of it all, but even better, the content matches the prettiness. No, it’s not ground breaking nor does it reveals big sewing secrets, but it’s nicely written and with lots of common sense (the less common of senses, you know). I often find myself nodding and silently saying word!

I’m reading it from the beginning, like a novel, a first with a sewing book. I’m not far yet, but I’ve reached the famous 5 items theory, see the excerpt here. The idea is simple, choose 5 items of your closet, your favorites, the ones that gets the most use, the ones that makes you happy wearing them. If you can find the reasons why you feel good in them, then you’ll be able to apply that criteria when choosing a new project, therefore sewing garments that you’ll love to wear.

So here are mine, it wasn't easy to single them out in a closet (or 2) full of clothes:

Black Karen Millen skinny jeans - live in this jeans, I wear them 2 x week, minimum. Why do I like them? For once, my butt looks good in it, it's that simple. Also, they don't loose shape after repeated wears.

Black Benetton dress - this is "I need to look good today" dress. For when going to the theatre or to a restaurant. Short and fitted, but not slutty. Perfect.

Black Vanilia cropped blazer - I've worn this one so often it's not funny anymore. Black blazers in different lengths and fabrics, my closet is full of them.

Self made purple dress Burda 01-2011-128 - This is the “I put it on in the morning and I’m done”. The most unlikely to be used pattern ever, in a cheap fabric, an experiment that turned out right. I love it, it’s the right color, it’s the right shape, it’s simple and it’s comfy. It’s also a proper man repeller* and that’s okay, too.

Print Mango dress - On the opposite side, this dress is short and fun, and definitively flirty. If I’m wearing it, anything can and will happen. My inner hipster comes out to play. Also it’s the most contemporary dress I have. By that I mean the look is “right now”, modern, not from 3 seasons ago like the rest of the closet. And right now, I love it.

Do I see a color trend here? Black, black, black. Like my humor and my mood! Have I sewn anything black? Hmm, no I don’t think so (there’s 2 UFOs somewhere, though). Do I have enough black fabric to fill 3 suitcases? Hell, yes! It’s easy in the morning, goes with anything, safe, instantly put together, no-fuss black. From the sewing perspective, It’s like a blank canvas that lets you experiment with shapes and fit, and it’s mistake-forgiving. Oh sure, you need natural light to sew, or a very potent lamp, but hey. Ok, so my basic color was easy to identify. Grey or dark blue are good substitutes, often used too, but my favorite remains black. I also love simple and minimalistic shapes (obvs my style was shaped back in the 90's when Calvin Klein and DK were my favourite designers).

Now, based on the above, why is my stash full of pinks, turquoise and loud floral prints? I'll leave that mystery for another time.
