Reseña - Burda 03-2015 - Review

Español
English

03-2015-115

03-2015-126 - Aquí me sale mi vena Man Repeller, el concepto falda-pantalón me fascina.

Hmm, NO.

03-2015-110

03-2015-120

I’ve had some doubts about this month’s Burda, to buy or not yo buy it, that's the question. It’s pretty bland, there isn’t an outstanding pattern that justifies the purchase. But, as my friend Joana says, if you don’t buy it, you’ll totally regret it a few months later.

So here’s a late review, with a few aahs and plenty of mehs.

Cool stuff

03-2015-118 - A petite sized, pretty dress, although the photos are not really showcasing it.

03-2015-118

03-2015-127 - Another pretty dress, specially the short version. The most apt for real-life use.

03-2015-127

Cool, but not really high in the to-do list

03-2015-115 - Because my experiments with shirring haven’t been really a success and there’s other jumpsuit patterns way more interesting (04-2014-107, still thinking about it).

03-2015-115

03-2015-126 - Here surfaces the Man Repeller in me. COS and Burda have been trying to convince us that culottes are the sh*t = 1 year later we’ll be all wearing this, mark my words.

03-2015-126

The offensive

03-2015-108 - At first sight it looks like a meh dress, but don’t get fooled. There’s a seam just below the breast (or through them, difficult to say from the photos). It’s a shapeless, potato sack but the worst is the zipper. Unnecessary zippers = Irene IRATE.

03-2015-108

03-2015-123 - This madness of a wedding mess dress doesn’t predict a happy and long marriage, you’ve been warned.

03-2015-123

Why Burda, why?

03-2015-110 & 03-2015-120 - Not offensive like the previous ones, but I just don’t get this rectangles coming out of the hips. Not one, but 2 patterns have been wasted on a style that flatters nobody. Hmm, NO.

Burda 2014-04-115

Español
English

¿Qué te gusta/no te gusta específicamente?

¿Qué tela has usado?

¿Has cambiado algo del patrón?

Nope.

I’m reviewing nowadays patterns I’ve made a while ago, the highlights of last year. I’m sewing a lot again, but I’m not *that* productive. And there’s been some fails, too! One day I’ll write about those, and we can all laugh together. Oh, and today’s photos are without head, because I had a bad face day.

This pattern is an asymmetrical top, 04-2014-115, from one of the best issues ever of Burda ever, April 2014.

Just like me, but blonde and tall

From the Solo in White collection, a very proper title btw, I made this top maybe the day after buying the mag. I’ve made 2 dresses as well, and someday I’ll make this one in a dark red crepe, it’s so cool …

I’ve got the fabric already, bwaaah!

Pattern Description:
From the Burda website: This boxy top is so elegant with the wrapped silhouette and wide boatneck. Wear it with low rise bottoms to show off the slightly asymmetrical hem.

Pattern Sizing:
European 34-42. I made my usual 36.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes it did, it’s exactly as shown in Burda. I actually have grey cropped trousers from a million years ago, so yeah, white single female alert.

Fade to white

Were the instructions easy to follow?

I just glanced at them, and the top was finished in an afternoon. So yeah, this is an easy one.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Like: that Nordic minimalist style, looks like out of a COS lookbook. No closures (zipper, buttons) at all – yay!

Dislike: The front panels are actually open and they can shift when I move (and I do move – a lot). I do wonder how this will work with busty gals, I can see how the front panels will open just when breathing.

Straightening this top

Fabric Used:

An Oxford shirt remnant I had in the stash forever.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

Minimal: I cut the back on fold and the bias finish is on the outer side instead of the inside.

Straightening this top (again)

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

I won’t sew it again just yet, the style is quite distinctive. But I do recommend the pattern, just your usual German precision work.

Conclusion:

I love it, specially paired with solid cropped and/or high waisted trousers. It’s office wear at its finest.

Yep, that's my reality

Reseña - La Maison Victor - Review

Español
English

It’s a pic heavy post today, hopefully they’ll show better than my last post (why the blurry photos, Blogger, why?!?). And no, it’s not an advertorial, I don’t get paid to write this stuff, I’m just a fan.

Today’s mag is La Maison Victor, published by Sanoma Belgium, quite a big mag publisher in this area. LMV started as a quarterly, but now it’s out every 2 months. It has such a pretty design, it’s eye candy.

Oooh, pretty colors

The first issue back in 2013 is still my favourite, there’s 2 nice dresses but the best is this jumpsuit, so simple but elegant.

Jumpsuits are catnip to me

Women sizes are usually 34-48 (European sizes). But there’s also clothes for kids, DYI stuff, and the best feature, imo, dude’s patterns.

Modern men patterns – they do exist

I say dude on purpose, they’re not boring men’s patterns a la Vogue. This is for adventurous guys, whose lifestyle includes making fire in the forest and eating the catch of the day.

Where’s the hipster beard?

I must admit that my eyes are fixed on the guy, I don’t care too much for the polo shirt. But hey, that’s me.

Who cares about the polo?

New sewing, knitting, DYI books, there’s just so many of them nowadays it’s difficult to keep up.

Books and more books

It’s possible to buy single patterns + video tutorial on the website. Some of them in PDF, mostly in paper. Also, the video tutorials are sold separately (who’s going to buy this, I wonder). And this is interesting, they also sell the fabric and yarn shown in the mag. There’s a hefty price tag, but sometimes the right fabric makes all the difference.

Fabric & yarns

Some DYI proyects are free to download. Sure, it’s in Dutch, but nothing Google translate can’t solve.

DYI gratis

I don’t buy every issue, and I can’t say if the patterns are well drafted or not, but I trust Belgians on this one. And it’s great to curl up on the couch and dream of minimalist sewing rooms, not a thread out of place …

Does this exist in real life?

That’s all folks, I’m off to trace a GREAT pattern I’ve just bought. I can’t say more, I’m not going to jinx this one.

M6696 - Vestido Camisero - Classic Shirt Dress

Español
English

¡Gente!

Irene = Futura tertuliana

Handmade with L♥♥VE – ay, el pavo

A: trabillas, cinturón comprado.

¿Qué te gusta/no te gusta específicamente?

¿Qué tela has usado?

¿Has cambiado algo del patrón?
Casi nada.

Zapatos rojos

Y otra para el camino

¡¡Que se me cae la cámara!!

Oh my! Yesterday I was interviewed on the Spanish radio! Nothing to do with sewing though, but the blog was mentioned and I’ve never had so many visitors in my life! I’m still high! (enough with the exclamation marks, woman – oh, all right then).

Irene = Future Radio Star

I can’t let my new fans down (all 3 of them), so let’s get this pattern review going, McCall’s M6696, a classic shirtdress. I’m so happy that I can make buttonholes – and alphabet embroidery!
Handmade with L♥♥VE - God, I'm corny

Pattern Description:
Dresses have collar, collar band, self-lined yoke back, close-fitting bodice, and band. A: carriers, purchased belt. A, B: pleated skirt, side pockets. A, C: purchased bias tape finishes armholes. D: sleeve bands. C, D: semi-fitted through hips, side front pockets, stitched hems. E: Bias, close-fitting slip has shoulder straps and very narrow hem. A/B, C, D cup sizes.

Pattern Sizing:
8-24. I made my usual 8, with A/B cup.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes it did. It’s a mix and match of skirt and sleeves, but yes.
Made for Pinterest

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, they're quite easy, but I mainly followed Pamela Howard’s The classic tailored shirt in Craftsy, specially the collar and stand collar instructions.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Like: it’s a classic design, the skirt variations, the cup sizes, a separate waist band.
Dislike: the back is gathered, not my favourite thing to sew, they’re never perfectly even. So I change it, see below. The sleeve bands should be turned up, but then they get a bit fussy when putting a coat on, but that’s a minor thing, really.

Sleeve bands

Fabric Used:
Blue-gray chambray from Fabric.com eons ago. Stash busting!

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
One minor thing, I changed the gathering in the back for a central back pleat. Not sure I like it better than the gathers, I may revert to them in future versions.

So-so pleat

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes and yes. In the semi fitted version, more office appropriate really. Right now I look like out of a Beatles concert, which I don’t mind really ;-) And some day I have to give the slip a try, I love slips and use them very often.

Conclusion:
A shirtdress with all the classic elements (collar, collar band, button bands, etc). It’s versatile and you look put together or playful, as usual fabric is key here.

Red shoes

And one more for the road

Camara falling down!!
