Minoru!

Español
English

¡Gente!

¿Qué te gusta/no te gusta específicamente?

¿Qué tela has usado?

¿Has cambiado algo del patrón?

People! I can't believe I actually finished a jacket, something I'm going to be wearing daily! I don't recognise myself, all this utilitary sewing it's so not me, it must be the cold weather getting to me :-)

Enough chit-chat! Let's review Sewaholic Pattern's Minoru.

Pattern Description:
From the Sewaholic website: The Minoru Jacket is a zip-front weekend jacket with a secret hood hidden inside the wide collar! If you prefer, skip the hood and let the dramatic collar be the focus. Flattering raglan sleeves are comfortable and easy-to-sew, and the elastic waistline creates a slim, curve-hugging silhouette.

No need to choose between having a hood OR a cute collar. The hood is tucked away in the wide, roomy collar, ready for when you need it, but stays hidden when you don’t! The collar looks great done up or left open. The jacket is fully lined, with interior patch pockets to stash your cards and keys safely and out of sight.

Practical and pretty!

Pattern Sizing:
Sizes: 0-16 – I’ve made a size 2

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes it did. It’s one of those patterns that I wanted to sew exactly as shown, color included.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes and no. The instructions alone (the paper ones, I mean) are a tad bare, assuming that you know what you’re doing. However, the sew along from the Sewaholic website takes you literally by the hand, step by step. I read the posts often to familiarize myself with the process and there are some useful alternatives and options (pockets).

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes: everything. A sport casual jacket that covers my derriere and it’s comfy to ride my bike, with a hoodie for that pesky Dutch rain. The elastic waist provides definition and shape. The sleeves are a bit long, on purpose, to keep your hands warm. I mean, it’s cute and it’s red, what’s not to love?

Dislikes: No pockets, other than the lining ones. Not difficult to add those at the sides or as patch pockets at the front (but be careful with the hem stitching line! see below).

The gather at the shoulders, while necessary, are a pain in the behind to sew. It’d be almost impossible to do with a thicker fabric.

The hoodie doesn’t stay in place, the slightest wind will throw it back. It shouldn’t be difficult to insert a cord there, though.

Fabric used:
A cotton/poly blend twill, from the market (3€/m). Hefty enough to become a warm jacket, supple enough to sew all those gathers.

The lining has jacket weight (heavier than usual) and I bought it a while ago with this pattern in mind.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
None, other than adding pockets at the sides. This didn’t go without drama, though. I didn’t consider that the hem line is stitched on the outside, and the pockets were just there, where the stitching line would be, something like this:

After a bit of fiddling, everything came out alright. Next time I’ll go for patch pockets, though.

Alterations I should have done: this pattern is designed for pear shaped women, and that’s not me. I should have shaved a few centimeters off the sides, from the waist down, but this falls in the “nobody would ever notice this but me” category.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Probably I’ll sew it again, in a rainproof fabric. But right now there’s a million coat, jacket or trench patterns I want to try. I do recommend it wholeheartedly, especially if you like this casual style.

Conclusion:
I finished a week ago and I’ve worn it every single day, so yeah, I LOVE this jacket so much. Yay for cake sewing!
